Ahead of CommunicAsia2016 held in Singapore, the island nation's Minister for Communications and Information, Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, spoke at the Infocomm Media Business Exchange's Ministerial Forum on ICT on Monday. He talked about all of the progress that Singapore has made as a '˜Smart Nation' which will include the world's first data centers designed to cater to tropical climates.

Cisco has published the latest edition of the Cisco Visual Networking Index, forecasting global IP traffic to have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22 percent over the next five years as more than one billion new Internet users grow the global Internet community from three billion in 2015 to 4.1 billion by 2020.

The Asia ICT Innovation Forum was held in conjunction with CommunicAsia2016. At the Forum organized by Singapore Exhibition Services and Huawei as the strategic partner, attended by over 500 regional ministerial representatives, internationally renowned economists and global industry thought leaders and professionals, Huawei outlined its roadmap to accelerate ICT transformation to enable more people in Asia Pacific to reap the benefits of ICT and move toward a better connected world.

SK Telecom has signed a MoU with Indonesia's largest telco, Telekom Indonesia, to cooperate in IoT, media and smart products and '˜Lifeware', SK Telecom's consumer-centric smart devices that add value and convenience to people's lives. Under the MoU the two companies will work together to develop new business opportunities in smart city and IoT services.

A new research report produced by Google and Temasek is forecasting Southeast Asia's internet economy to grow to about $US200 billion by 2025, from $US31 billion last year, spearheaded by the e-commerce, leisure travel, and online gaming and digital advertisements sectors. It says that, to realize these opportunities, the region needs an injection of up to $US50 billion worth of investments over the next 10 years.

Ericsson and China Unicom have signed a MoU to collaborate on next-generation networks. The two companies say they aim to accelerate the development of next-generation network standardization and the maturity of network infrastructure, to establish cross-industry ecosystems and to foster innovation for new business, 'to help drive innovation and early application of 5G mobile network technology.'

Inmarsat says a survey of airline passengers worldwide, commissioned from GfK, shows soaring demand for in-flight broadband in Asia Pacific, with nine out of ten respondents from the region saying the availability of onboard connectivity would influence their choice of airline and over two thirds willing to pay for the service.
