Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. has entered into a 2-year strategic partnership with Fujitsu Limited to explore the possibility of establishing a network using All-Photonics Network (APN) technology based on the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative in Taiwan.

Establishing a network using All-Photonics Network (APN) technology based on the IOWN initiative in Taiwan offers several advantages. Firstly, APN technology leverages photonics, enabling the transmission of data at the speed of light, resulting in significantly higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to traditional electronic networks. This enhanced performance is critical for supporting bandwidth-intensive applications such as 5G, IoT, and high-definition video streaming. Additionally, APN technology is inherently energy-efficient, reducing power consumption and environmental impact.

Furthermore, by embracing IOWN's holistic approach to network architecture, which integrates optical and wireless technologies seamlessly, the network becomes more flexible, scalable, and adaptable to future technological advancements. This not only ensures Taiwan's position at the forefront of telecommunications innovation but also facilitates the development of smart cities, intelligent transportation systems, and other digital infrastructure initiatives, fostering economic growth and societal advancement.

The partnership showcases Chunghwa Telecom’s commitment to addressing sustainability concerns in the network sector in the country.

Improving Taiwan’s Network Landscape

In March 2020, Chunghwa Telecom and Fujitsu became members of the IOWN Global Forum, which aims to develop a network environment with high capacity, low latency, and low power consumption.  

Chih-Hsiung Huang, SEVP & CTO at Chunghwa Telecom, emphasized the positive impact of the partnership with the telco sector in Taiwan.

“Chunghwa Telecom and Fujitsu will work together to develop an Open All-Photonic Network to provide better optical communication quality for various innovative applications such as B5G/6G, AI, and cloud computing— which promotes early access to the convenience brought about by information and communication services for the society and people in Taiwan,” said Huang.

Both companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to introduce Fujitsu’s APN technology in Taiwan. Through this partnership, Chunghwa Telecom and Fujitsu will build a verification facility for APN in the country, with plans to promote the commercial use of this technology.
