The Indian government has approved a funding package of INR 10,300 crore (USD 1.24 billion) for its IndiaAI mission. This program aims to support India's AI innovation ecosystem and improve access to computing infrastructure across the country. The strategy includes initiatives such as IndiaAI Compute Capacity, IndiaAI Innovation Centre (IAIC), and IndiaAI FutureSkills.

Funded through a public-private partnership, the IndiaAI Compute Capacity program will involve building a state-of-the-art AI supercomputer in the country with over 10,000 GPUs. Details about the system's specifications have not been disclosed. The IndiaAI Innovation Centre will use government funds to lead the development of foundation models and large multimodal models.

Meanwhile, IndiaAI FutureSkills will focus on expanding AI education by making graduate and post-graduate AI programs more accessible.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, emphasized the importance of AI for India's digital economy. He expressed his gratitude following the Prime Minister’s (Modi), approval of over 10,000 crores for the India AI program. This will boost India's AI ecosystem and establish it as a leading force in shaping the future of AI globally.

In addition to the IndiaAI program, the Indian government is moving forward with a USD 10 billion semiconductor scheme. Recently, land has been allocated for new semiconductor plants for Tata Group and CG Power in Gujarat.

Tata Group's plant in Dholera will have the capacity to produce 50,000 12-inch wafers per month, while CG Power's joint venture with Renesas and Stars Micro in Sanand will focus on chip packaging. These new plants were approved as part of the Indian government's efforts to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the country through schemes like the Modified Programme for Semiconductors and Display Fab Ecosystem.

Under this program, companies can seek funding for up to 50 percent of the capital expenses associated with eligible semiconductor and display manufacturing projects. Additionally, Micron Technologies has received approval for its ATMP facility.
