Vice President for 5G Core Network Technology at KT, Yongmin Choi took to the stage at 5G Asia 2019 to explore the potential of 5G network management on a larger scale during his keynote speech “Preparing for the 2nd phase of 5G commercialisation: Findings and future tasks”.

Choi first showcased KT’s journey towards launching 5G by using the PyeongChang Winter Olympics 2018 as an example, where 5G trial services were rolled out in multiple promotional areas of PyeongChang, Gangneung as well as Seoul and Gangwon-do.

During his presentation, Choi talked about the typical battery capacity for mobile phones and made the comparison between previous generations’ mobile network capacity to the potential speed of 5G which comes up to an impressive 1.6 Gbps.

He further highlighted 3 core factors when it came to deploying 5G commercially; high priority on population traffic, the utilisation of major transportation routes and identifying strategic spots for an ideal 5G ecosystem. When it came to transportation routes, Choi said that the plan would be to “build new radio units in airports, major highways and high-speed railways” among others.
