During the panel, industry experts convened to talk about the challenges of optimising the utilisation of resources in order to ensure a seamless transition into the 5G sphere.

One of the panelists, Mr. Imran Malik who is the vice president of global sales fixed data at SES said that one of the common threads when it came to comparing older technologies like 2G, 3G and 4G was the desire to preserve the pre-existing infrastructure, which is quite different from what is happening with 5G now.

Mr. Vaneet Mehta, head of Middle East, Central Asia and Africa for Tata Communications on the other hand believed that despite its inherently different internal infrastructures, 4G may be one of the few technologies that would still be able to co-exist peacefully with 5G for the next few years.

“Just like with 2G and 3G, 4G and 5G will coexist for a long time, because it’s not about a technology phase out, but it has to do with spectrum as well that is governed by its respective countries.”
