Japan’s NTT partnered with Major League Baseball (MLB) to organise a Proof of Concept (PoC) implementing NTT’s Ultra Reality Viewing technology (URV). This application showcased the viability of a super-high-definition real time all-encompassing video fan experience event, according to NTT.

The new technology was demonstrated at the American League Division Series Game 3, which was sponsored by South Korea conglomerate Doosan between the Houston Astros and Tropicana Fields’ Tampa Bay Rays. NTT mounted several 4K cameras all around the stadium that transmitted HD videos directly to a 90.6” x 469” wide screen, supplemented with 6ch surround sound as well as original audio sauce to a viewing area situated in MLB Network’s studio in Secaucus, NJ.

NTT explained that URV incorporates super high definition surround video recordings that cannot be captured by common cameras, including sound innovations which empower original sounds to create and transmit over long distances without loss and time difference.

Last month, MLB and NTT had signed a multi-year technology alliance, making NTT the first Japan-based IT company to be introduced as an official MLB partner in the US. The contract will facilitate and leverage NTT’s URV tool to further expand and produce more services for baseball fans.
