Nokia and BT Group have joined forces in a partnership aimed at creating new ways to generate revenue from 5G networks. BT plans to leverage Nokia's network as code platform along with its own cloud-native network to unlock and explore these opportunities.

Monetizing 5G Networks

Nokia's platform helps operators like BT monetize their 5G network assets by providing tools such as Software Development Kits (SDK) and open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to application developers. This gives developers access to network functionality and data, allowing them to create new use cases for their customers.

Managing Director of Mobile Networks at BT Group, Reza Rahnama, stated that 5G networks are software-based and offer capabilities like improving network quality on demand. He believes that this new technology opens up possibilities that were not available before, and BT will use Nokia's platform to tap into these capabilities that they have been actively building into their 5G network.

Under their agreement, Nokia and BT will make these tools available to developers, enabling them to utilize BT Group's network features, develop new use cases, and create value for EE customers— the UK mobile network operated by BT.

The platform, launched in September, is based on a revenue share model between developers, operators, and Nokia as the platform provider. Nokia previously announced a similar agreement with US operator, DISH Wireless.

The head of the network monetization platform at Nokia, Shkumbin Hamiti, praised BT Group for their work in opening telecom networks to application developers through their API Developer portal. He believes that this agreement will enhance their joint work with developers and create new opportunities for extracting value from BT Group's network assets.

Partnership Benefits

Leveraging Nokia's network as code platform allows for more efficient and flexible network management. This can result in optimized resource allocation, reduced operational costs, and improved overall network performance. The cloud-native approach further enhances scalability and adaptability to meet evolving demands.

The partnership enables BT to expedite the deployment of services and solutions by leveraging Nokia's technology and expertise. This acceleration is crucial in the rapidly evolving telecommunications industry, allowing both companies to stay ahead in the competitive 5G market.

By combining Nokia's and BT's technologies, the partnership can harness the strengths of each company to create a more robust and comprehensive solution. This synergy could lead to the development of cutting-edge applications and services that cater to the evolving needs of businesses and consumers in the 5G era.

The collaboration positions Nokia and BT Group strategically in the market, providing a competitive edge by offering a unique combination of network capabilities and services. This can attract new customers, strengthen existing partnerships, and contribute to the overall market leadership of both companies.
