5G-enabled Wi-Fi hotspots have been turned on in Australia by telecom provider Telstra. The company is using the connectivity via its recently opened 5G Innovation Centre on the Gold Coast in Queensland to power a series of Wi-Fi hotspots as well as a 5G Connected Car, said Telstra Managing Director Networks Mike Wright.

3 Hong Kong, the mobile arm of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited and Huawei announced activation of the five components of carrier aggregation (5CC CA) technology this month to coincide with launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, the first handsets to support 5CC CA technology. This advanced cross-spectrum approach amounts to a significant milestone in 4.5G technology and heralds the next phase of the 5G era.

Huawei Marine announced the kick-off of Phase II of its Sorsogon-Samar Submarine Fiber Optical Interconnection Project (SSSFOIP) for the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). The SSSFOIP system is located in the San Bernardino Strait, linking Sorsogon, the southernmost province on Luzon to the island of Samar.

Philippines telecom provider Globe Telecom partnered with Huawei to commence the trial of the world's first FDD Massive MIMO commercial product. FDD Massive MIMO is expected to boost cell capacity by a factor of two to three times based on legacy terminals compared to the current LTE deployment. This enhancement in cell capacity will provide a better experience for more consumers.

Huawei announced it is the first company to complete a 5G NSA (Non-Stand Alone) functional test based on 3GPP. The NSA test took place in the third-phase of China's 5G technology tests in Beijing’s Huairou District. The test was organized by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, which aims to meet the ITU’s International Mobile Telecommunication system target date of 2020.

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has collaborated with Japanese telecom provider NTT DOCOMO, Japanese commuter railway company Tobu Railway and Chinese ICT solutions provider Huawei to conduct 5G field trials in Tokyo Skytree Town, a modern commercial center in the Sumida District of Tokyo that was opened in May 2012.

In an Australian first, telecom provider Telstra has recorded smartphone speeds in excess of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) on a commercial network using the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. Kevin Teoh, Telstra’s Head of Mobiles said it’s the first time in Australia that speeds in excess of 1Gbps have been demonstrated on a commercial network with a commercial smartphone.

New Zealand’s largest telecom provider, Spark, has switched on the Pacific country’s first live 5G mobile test site in the capital city Wellington, with Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media, Hon. Clare Curran, becoming the first member of the public to run a 5G speed test achieving speeds of over 9Gbps.

Indonesia’s Telkomsel announces the successful commercial deployment of CloudAIR 2.0 solution in 2018 Mobile Word Congress (MWC 2018). This solution is the result of Telkomsel and Huawei’s Joint Innovation Center 2.0 (JIC2.0), aimed to reshape the air interface with the concept of cloudification and efficiently share the air interface resources such as spectrum, power and channel. The implementation of this solution will improve the air interface efficiency and enable operators to have more flexibility to deploy the networks and provide a better user experience.
