Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has successfully demonstrated India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service, bringing high-speed broadband to previously inaccessible areas in the country. JioSpaceFiber will be available nationwide at an affordable price.

Currently, Jio offers high-speed internet, fixed-line and wireless services to over 450 million Indian subscribers. The company has launched JioSpaceFiber alongside its broadband services, JioFiber and JioAirFiber, to promote digital inclusion in India. The satellite network will also provide more capacity for mobile backhaul, increasing the availability and scalability of Jio True5G in the country’s most rural areas.

Jio aims to partner with SES to access the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology, the only one capable of providing gigabit, fiber-like services from space. Jio, using SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites, will offer scalable, affordable, broadband across India with industry-leading reliability and flexibility.

“Jio has enabled millions of homes and businesses in India to experience broadband internet for the first time. With JioSpaceFiber, we will expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected,” said Akash Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited.

“Together with Jio, we are honoured to support the Government of India’s ‘Digital India’ initiative with a unique solution that aims to deliver multiple gigabits per second of output to any location in India,” noted John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES.

JioSpaceFiber has already been deployed in four remote sites in India, namely Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odissa and ONGC-Jorhat Assam to demonstrate its strength and reach.
