Seren Juno Network Co., Ltd. and Seren Juno Network America Inc. (Seren), operators of the NTT DATA-led JUNO submarine cable system, will implement Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme, utilizing WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e), to bolster Japan’s digital hub aspirations.

The 10,000 km JUNO cable, connecting the United States and Japan, is slated for launch at the end of 2024 and aims to enhance high-capacity service delivery across the Asia Pacific region.

Yoshio Sato, CEO of Seren, stated that NTT DATA is committed to delivering reliable global internet infrastructure, and Ciena's industry-leading WaveLogic 6 coherent optical technology will ensure a strong start for JUNO. He emphasized that the demands for building a global digital economy continue to grow, thus, strong capacity and network performance are crucial pillars in supporting this rapid expansion.

“Existing Japan-U.S. cables are nearing capacity limits and there is a need to meet the growth of bandwidth-intensive applications associated with AI, cloud-based services, and streaming videos. Powered by WL6e, the JUNO cable, which is the largest trans-Pacific submarine cable system, will be ready to hit new service delivery targets as soon as it launches,” said Thomas Soerenson, Vice President, Global Submarine Solutions, Ciena.

The JUNO cable will achieve exceptional fiber capacity and spectral efficiency through Ciena’s performance-optimized WL6e, which supports widespread 800 GB, 400 GB, and 100 GB services. JUNO will also utilize Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite, enhancing operational efficiencies by streamlining planning, provisioning, and assurance workflows.

Furthermore, Ciena Services will offer submarine-specific automation for installation, spectrum activation, and testing, leading to time savings and better spectrum optimization. Technical support for Submarine Line Terminal Equipment will be provided to ensure maximum network reliability.
